In the heart of Rwemirama ward within Kamwenge town council, a story of profound resilience and systemic injustice unfolds through the life of Kiconco Agnes. Her journey is a stark reminder of the hidden struggles faced by many women who are left to shoulder the weight of an entire household alone. After her husband departed for Juba, South Sudan, seeking work, he vanished from their lives entirely, leaving no financial support and no word of his whereabouts. This sudden abandonment transformed Agnes’s home into a site of struggle, where the basic necessity of providing for her four children became a daily battle against overwhelming odds.

A Cycle of Betrayal and Injustice

The challenges Agnes faces are compounded by a broader culture of gender-based injustice that has targeted the most vulnerable members of her family. Her aged mother sought refuge with her after being subjected to a heartbreaking betrayal. In a pursuit of profit, her own sons Agnes’s brothers forcibly removed her from her home and sold the land that was her only security. With nowhere else to turn, the elderly woman fled to her daughter’s home, adding to the caregiving responsibilities of a household already teetering on the edge of poverty. This pattern of denying women their rights to property and safety highlights the systemic hurdles that organizations like Tinah Shelter of Hope Uganda (TSOHU) strive to dismantle

Turning Victims into Victors

The intervention of TSOHU on December 9, 2023, marked a turning point for this family. Recognizing that education is the ultimate pathway to empowerment, the organization lobbied for Macklean, eventually securing the support needed to return her to the classroom. Initially joining Trinity High School, Macklean and other survivors were eventually connected with sponsors who provided for their basic necessities and safe shelter away from the environments that had previously caused them pain. Today, Macklean is progressing steadily in her secondary education, a testament to what can be achieved when a community refuses to let a victim remain one.
